The Beauty of Bora Bora, French Polynesia

The Beauty of Bora Bora, French Polynesia One of Sherri's (my late wife) favorite places of earth was Bora Bora.

We first discovered French Polynesia when we stopped for 2 nights in Moorea in route to traveling to Victoria Australia (Melbourne and the southern coast) and both the North and South isles of New Zealand when I worked for United Airlines.

We both loved the charm and beauty of French Polynesia (which is south of the equator, in line with Chile-almost as far west as Hawaii) so much that prior to quitting my job at the Eugene airport (I had put in my notice to become a full time photographer), we flew to Tahiti and spent time there, Moorea and at the Bora Bora.

Whenever you would ask Sherri the most quintessential paradise island...always Bora Bora.

At the time, there were 2000 inhabitants (now 10,000) and just 5 hotels (now 14), the Hotel Bora Bora-where we stayed at 1/2 airline discount rate-being the first and most prestigious at the time.

Towards the end of our trip, I went back to the demolished remnants of the Hotel Bora Bora and walked on the same beach Sherri did 31 years ago.....

Then, all the hotels were ON the island, now very few are.   They are on atolls so you can look at the island (see photo below)

Although it is still absolutely incredible, I have to say its become a bit over crowded with too many tourists now.

The image below is of the Hilton Bora Bora from the reception walk way.  They have paddleboards (over rated in my opinion...) and kayaks.  We stayed in a hatched roof bungalow over the water (#104) beyond the ones you see to the right. The restaurant is at far left.

On our Jet ski tour day, we later swam with black tipped sharks (harmless-but they don't look it) and domesticated sting rays-they were soft and rubbery....

I took this on our drive around the island.  The cliffs are amazing and the homes, very simple.

Gotta have a hammock to relax if you are in an island paradise, right?  At the Hilton.

Bloody Mary's has been in business since 1980...Sand floor, decent food, it is THE place everyone goes who travels to Bora Bora, from Carrie Underwood to Johnny Depp. But the BEST restaurant (which I KNOW Sherri would have gone to) is run by a french chef called La Villa Mahana.  5 course meal-and probably one of the best I've ever had.

I really wanted our kids to experience one of the places that she would visualize when she thought of a peaceful place to go.  While going for five nights may not be a wise economic decision (it is very expensive there), it was a good emotional/personal one.  We bonded well, had fun, had time to relax and reflect and came back with an appreciation of a place and culture that Sherri loved.
